Each student applied for the Weir Fellowship separately but combined forces to launch the IWU Peace Garden. The budget was used to buy seeds, tools, and other supplies. Both Danny and Ryan started the fellowship in the spring to plan the garden but continued through the summer to implement their plans.

Summer of 2012 was a tough year to start a garden! Drought conditions and very hot weather were challenging but the Weir Fellows persevered. They grew a wide variety of produce including tomatoes, peppers, beets, and potatoes. Some produce was donated to local food pantries (Clare House and Western Avenue Community Center) and some was sold at the first on-campus farmers’ market.

The Peace Garden is looking forward to 2013 with plans to expand the garden and its reach. There has been interest from the campus and community to be more involved and we hope to recruit more volunteers to help with the many facets of the garden.
