Homecoming 2017: Back to College Classes – Lavanga Wijekoon ’04

Lavanga Wijekoon ’04 came to IWU as an international student from Sri Lanka. Now an attorney at an international law firm in Chicago, he advises and represents multinational employers. Recently, he has participated in negotiations for a business and human rights treaty at the United Nations. He also represents pro bono asylum seekers and “Dreamer” applicants. As a speaker for Homecoming 2017’s Back to College Classes, Lavanga shared his thoughts on how IWU – his friends, professors, and work-study at Saga – prepared him for his career, and how he met his wife-to-be on a May Term class. His presentation, entitled “From the SAGA Dishroom to International Law Firm: A Former International Student’s Reflections”, may be viewed below.

Congratulations, Lavanga!

Abby Reel ’04 Advocates to Save Theater in Goodfield

Since a 2015 storm destroyed the Barn II Dinner Theater in Goodfield, IL, Abby Reel ’04 has been working to save it.

The antique structure had long been used by a theater troupe and was well-known in the community. After it sustained catastrophic damaged, locals and enthusiasts have been campaigning to rebuild the site.

The initiative is estimated to cost $100,000, which will provide updated facilities and accommodate nearly 40% more capacity. Materials from the original site will be integrated into the design as a nod to its rich history. The building, aptly named The Barn III, will expand its use to include community events and weddings.
