Executive Summary: Abby supported the ongoing Veggie Oasis and Community Gardens for WBRP this summer. The Veggie Oasis is a vegetable gleaning program that brings unsold produce from the Downtown Bloomington Farmer’s Market every Saturday to the WBRP office to be distributed for free. This program brings fresh produce to a neighborhood that is considered a food desert by the USDA. Abby coordinated the weekly stand and organized volunteers and food giveaways. At the WBRP community gardens, Abby supported resident and WBRP board member Val Dumser with the management of existing community gardens at the corner of Mulberry and Roosevelt streets. Abby also piloted a brand new garden at 714 W. Jefferson in partnership with students at the Regional Alternative School and the State Farm Learning & Leading Program. Raised bed gardens were installed and fruits and vegetables were planted. Students at RAS will be able to harvest these plants and take them home.
