Open Access Week 2017

To celebrate Open Access Week, Stephen Hawking has made his 1966 doctoral dissertation, “Properties of Expanding Universes,” open access through Cambridge University’s repository:

“He said: “By making my PhD thesis open access, I hope to inspire people around the world to look up at the stars and not down at their feet; to wonder about our place in the universe and to try and make sense of the cosmos.

Anyone, anywhere in the world should have free, unhindered access to not just my research, but to the research of every great and inquiring mind across the spectrum of human understanding.” (from The Guardian)

Website Redesign in Progress

CARLI Shared eBook Project

Our academic library consortium CARLI has negotiated a multi-publisher program that allows e-books to be shared among all CARLI library users in Illinois. The program provides over 29,000 titles in all disciplines; the publisher list is included at the end of this message.

Catalog records for these titles are available in our local catalog and the I-Share catalog. You may also visit the CARLI eBook website to access the titles directly. You will be prompted to authenticate, whether or not you are on campus, to enable tracking of circulations. These e-books have a 7 day loan period and users can view content online, download and print. Once a title has been used 9 times, it is purchased by CARLI for permanent use by all libraries.

This pilot program comes as part of our CARLI governing library membership and follows months of negotiations by the CARLI staff. Shared consortial e-book programs are still quite unusual, as publishers are leery of this changing marketplace. Therapy Dogs at Ames – Reading Day

5843023076_159ff65fda_zStressed out?  IWUF1RST is bringing therapy dogs to The Ames Library Patio on Wednesday, April 23 from 2 pm – 6 pm.  There will also be massage chairs and yoga, and we’re excited about those too, but mostly we’re looking forward to hanging out and snuggling with cute dogs.  Thanks to IWUF1RST for sponsoring this event! John Wesley Powell Conference, April 12

John Wesley Powell Conference logo

You are invited to the 25th John Wesley Powell Undergraduate Research Conference beginning on Friday, April 11 with posters and presentations by students from Educational Studies in The Ames Library from 4 pm – 7 pm.  On Saturday, April 12, the conference begins at 9 am in the Center for Natural Sciences with posters and presentations from students in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. Composition students will present their work during the luncheon, and students from the School of Art will present their work beginning at 1 pm in the Ames School of Art. Our keynote this year is Paul Black, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow from Wake Forest Baptist Health.  For the full schedule, please see the conference website.  For programs and presentations from past conferences, please visit the conference archive.

Congratulations to the Newly Tenured and Promoted!

The IWU Board of Trustees recently approved tenure and promotions for nine faculty, including Ames’ own Meg Miner, University Archivist & Special Collections Librarian, and Chris Sweet, Information Literacy Librarian!  Congratulations to Meg and Chris and to our faculty colleagues on this momentous achievement!
