Ianne Fields Stewart ’15 wins Robert M. Montgomery Outstanding Young Alumni Award

Fields Stewart was recognized during a ceremony from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 in Young Main Lounge at the Memorial Center. The event was part of IWU’s Homecoming celebration.

Fields Stewart ’15 (pronouns: she/her/they/them) is a black, queer, lesbian, and nonbinary transfeminine New York-based storyteller and activist. As a performer (actor, singer, and dancer), Fields Stewart has worked consistently in stage productions at NYC venues such as: Joe’s Pub, Dixon Place, La Mama, and many more. Film/TV acting credits include: Dash & Lily (recurring guest star), The Bold Type (guest star), and Pose (recurring). Fields Stewart played opposite Sara Ramirez in the Emmy Nominated web series The Feels. As a writer, Fields Stewart’s play A Dying Breed has had several productions throughout the United States including a run in New York City, and her original spoken word work has been showcased at The Duplex and Joe’s Pub. Fields Stewart has several writing projects for the stage and television in development. An activist with a national platform, Fields Stewart was a US Fellow for the Humanity in Action John Lewis Fellowship, and received the 2021 inaugural Logo Legends Award, among many other honors. She is also the founder of The Okra Project, which seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People wherever they can reach them. The Okra Project gained prominence in June 2020 when the project announced the Nina Pop and Tony McDade Mental Health Recovery Funds which supplies Black Trans People with free therapy with Black therapists. Fields Stewart co-organized 2020’s Brooklyn Liberation: A Rally for Black Trans Lives and delivered a speech in front of 15,000 people who gathered to march for Black Trans lives.

In the past two years we’ve witnessed the Titan community come together in new ways to share stories, expertise, and friendship. However, we have long awaited the chance to welcome you back to campus for a true Illinois Wesleyan Homecoming! We look forward to sharing a meal, a drink, and a story with all of you in person, September 23-25, 2022.

Homecoming Veteran’s Service 2017

As IWU celebrates Titans Around the World at Homecoming this weekend, we will also honor our alumni who served worldwide as veterans and first-responders, including Captain Ryan A. Beaupre ’95. We will remember Ryan and all veterans and first-responders who have given their lives in the service of others and our country. Presenting the colors will be American Legion Color Guard Post 635 Normal and Post 56 from Bloomington. The ceremony will take place this Saturday, October 14th at 12:45 p.m., prior to the Homecoming Football game at Tucci Stadium and will include the National Anthem sung by Wayne Messmer ’72.  Classmates and friends can view the ceremony on streaming video live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/iwu/.
