Dr. Steve Doran ’79

Dr. Steve Doran ’79, an oral surgeon in Bloomington, Illinois, will be presented the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award at Homecoming on October 5th at the Alumni Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Center’s, Young Main Lounge.  This award is presented to an alumnus or alumna who has made a distinguished contribution to society, has achieved distinction in his or her profession, or has demonstrated civic leadership.

In 2011, the Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS) presented Doran with the President’s Award for outstanding contributions to the dental profession. Since then, he has made 12 oral surgery mission trips to Haiti and Honduras, in addition to his participation in the Gary S. Johnson ’71 free extraction clinic and four ISDS Mission of Mercy clinics. He presently serves on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal and John Scott Health Services.

1973 Theatre Grad Stars in The Gin Game

 

Katherine James, a 1973 theatre major, is starring in The Gin Game, which opened September 8 at the Sierra Madre Playhouse in Sierra Madre, California, and will run through October 6. In addition to acting, James also writes and directs. She is the founding director of ACT of Communication, the first organization to apply theatre to the law. Among other activities, ACT of Communication conducts stagecraft workshops for lawyers (actofcommunication.com).

 The first person to tell James about the glowing review of The Gin Game was another 1973 theatre graduate: Nancy Rose Harrington, who is flying out to Sierra Madre to attend the play. Tom H. Bost ’78

Tom Bost ’78 was a former Drama Major at Illinois Wesleyan University. He now lives in Rocklin, CA where he teaches drama and English and performs in the Sacramento area.

Tom was recently nominated for an “Elly”, a performing award for best supporting actor in a comedy. There are over 50 professional and nonprofessional regional and community theaters in the general Sacramento area.

Duck Hunter Shoots Angel is the production that Tom performed in as the Supporting Male.

David Darling ’79

David Darling ’79, a partner/shareholder in the law firm Stone & Johnson, Chtd, in Chicago, IL. has been nominated by his peers and selected as one of Illinois Leading Lawyers in Construction Law in 2018. Dave concentrates his practice in construction law, product liability, transportation and general negligence defense work in civil litigation.

Charles Hohenstein ’76

 We are saddened to announce that Dr. Charles R. Hohenstein ’76 passed away at home in South Bend, IN, on November 30, 2017, at the age of 62. He graduated from Mt. Auburn (IL) High School with the class of 1973 and held degrees from Illinois Wesleyan and Chicago Theological Seminary. Dr. Hohenstein pastored Methodist churches before earning a PhD from the University of Notre Dame, where he taught humanities for a time. You can view his obituary here.
