Quita (Verban) Shier ’60 wrote a book called “Warriors in Mr. Lincoln’s Army: Native American Soldiers Who Fought in the Civil War” that was published by iUniverse in December of 2017 and is now available online for purchase. The book contains comprehensive profiles of 140 little-known soldiers (enlisted “grunts”) of Company K, First Michigan Sharpshooters and the reasons why they wanted to enlist to fight a war in a country where they were not even recognized as citizens. Each profile is divided into two sections: the men’s military experiences and their biographies. These profiles are their stories.

Congratulations, Quita!

Justin R. Kronewetter ’62, Emeritus Professor of Fine Art / Emeritus Director, Ross Art Museum at Ohio Wesleyan University shared that there is an exhibition of his photographic artwork currently on display in the Wakeley Gallery in the art department at IWU.  The show is on display through 4pm on March 22nd.

In the fall of 2017 Don Roth ’62 organized a group of IWU Sigma Chi’s from the classes of 1960 through 1964 in the Chicago area to celebrate more than 55 years of brotherhood and friendship. On Tuesday, PEN America announced that David Kindred ’63 won the PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement in Literary Sports Writing. The award is given “to a living sports writer for literary merit and dedication to sports writing with keen knowledge, insight, and a literary voice.”

Kindred began his career at the Bloomington Pantagraph in 1959 after attending IWU. Since 1966, Kindred has written for the Louisville Courier-Journal, Louisville Times, The Washington Post, Atlanta Journal Constitution, The National and Sporting News.

His work includes Heroes, Fools and Other Dreamers: A Sportswriter’s Gallery of Extraordinary People, Around the World in 18 Holes, For the Love of the Game: Women Who Go Toe-To-Toe With the Men, Morning Miracle: Inside the Washington Post The Fight to Keep a Great Newspaper Alive, and Sound and Fury: Two Powerful Lives, One Fateful Friendship.

Since 2010, Kindred has written an online blog about the Morton High School girls basketball team.
