Nadine (Callahan) Simpson ‘49 died June 15, 2020. She was 91. Nadine received a bachelor’s degree at Illinois Wesleyan and a master’s degree at Syracuse University. She spent the majority of her career in journalism in roles at the United Methodist Information Center in Chicago, United Methodist publications, and later, the Oberlin (Kansas) Herald. Nadine and her husband dutifully served as missionaries in Liberia and Mozambique, where they touched countless lives. She spent her life in service to the United Methodist Church, her community, and her family. She is survived by her husband, four children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

My sincerest sympathy to Nadine’s family. I would love to hear from them. Nadine was my roommate at DeMotte Lodge her senior year. We broke the rules! We had a hot plate in our room, kept our milk and eggs on the windowsill in cold weather, prepared our own breakfast, don’t remember wha we did for lunch, but we cooked dinner mixing cooked macaroni with one can of condensed soup. On Wednesdays we invited a friend to eat with us if she would bring dessert! As far as I know, we were the first integrated dorm on campus, and when at the end of the year all the girls made plans to have dinner downtown, when we arrived they wouldn’t serve us because of the “Negroes.” Nadine was dorm president and she and our housemother and they told the host that we were from Wesleyan and expected our reservation to be honored. They relented and let us in, but admonisihed us never do that again!
