Ethics Bowl Team Makes a Stop in D.C.

The Illinois Wesleyan University Ethics Bowl team visited Washington, D.C. the day before competing in a national competition. It was the third time in five years an IWU team has competed in the national Ethics Bowl.

Melissa Guzman ’16 Invited to Leadership Conference by Chicago alderman

IWU political science major Melissa Guzman was invited by Chicago alderman Sylvia Torres to attend the annual United States Hispanic Leadership Institute Conference after an interview over the phone for Guzman’s senior seminar project, which focused on the underrepresentation of Latina women in government positions.

Guzman is extending her work for Research Honors.

Mary Kate Schmidt ’16 in First Division III All-American Women’s Soccer Team

On Jan. 25, 2016 IWU Senior Mary Kate Schmidt was named to the first team of the D3soccer.com 2015 NCAA Division III All-American squads for women’s soccer.

Schmidt was chosen to the second team in the 2014 Division III All-American squads. She was also named the CCIW “Player of the Year” — a first for an IWU women’s soccer player — as well as the CCIW “Player of the Week” five times in 2015.

IWU Seniors to Return to Ethics Bowl Nationals

The IWU Ethics Bowl team will compete at the national Intercollegiate Ethics bowl competition for the third time in five years, with senior members Steph McAtee and Eric Hyla returning for their second competition.

Anna Moczynski ’16, Nick Bates ’16, and Hang (Jade) Phung ’17 will join McAtee and Hyla for their first national Ethics Bowl competition, to be held on Feb. 21, 2016.

Megan Win ’16 Places at National Vocal Competition

Megan Win ’16 and Megan Callison ’16 competed alongside six other Illinois Wesleyan students at the national Art Song Festival at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee on Jan. 9, 2016. Win was awarded second place in the national competition and invited to sing in a master class with two of the judges of the event. All eight students advanced to the finals in their divisions.

The other students who competed were: Megan Koch ’17 (third place), Thomas Bravos ’17, Emily Brink ’17, Louisa Klemperer ’18, Maddie Steele ’19 and Elizabeth Turner ’18.

Christine Peterson ’16

Christine Peterson ’16 and Allie Spontak ’17 were able to meet with Virginia Shannon Guy ’37. Virginia is an Illinois Wesleyan Alumna who recently turned 100 years old. Christine and Allie were able to speak with her about her time at Illinois Wesleyan and in Sigma Kappa. Virginia’s advice to Christine and Allie was to be true to yourself and make your family proud.

Alyssa Gibson ’16

Alyssa Gibson ’16 interned with Country Financial in the the Public Relations department. Interns were able to participate in a case study competition, where Alyssa’s team won third place out of eleven teams. This experience was her favorite part of the internship.
