Homecoming 2017: Back to College Classes – Wayne Messmer ’72

Wayne Messmer ’72 shared his story of being a blue-collar kid on the Chicago South Side, transformed into an Illinois Wesleyan alumni success as a professional speaker, singer, broadcaster, author and actor. He shared his story of sudden, unexpected change which nearly cost him his life and his voice. Through that experience, Wayne learned what it takes to come out on the other side of change and trauma to help others do the same and realize the true spirit of a Champion. His presentation, entitled “From Wesleyan to the World Series”, may be viewed below.

Bradley Slocum ’75

We are sorry to announce that Bradley Slocum ’75 passed away in 2009. Brad Slocum ’75 was an amazing builder, not only of buildings, but of lives. He built homes and churches as close by as Rockford, and as far away as Trinidad & Tobago and St. Thomas, where he did missions work and hurricane relief. But his trophy was The George Washington Inn in Port Angeles, WA. It is a replica of Mt. Vernon. Check it out at georgewashingtoninn.com. Brad passed away at age 57 of cancer. At the time of his illness and death, he was a teacher of construction at Bob Jones University. This was his favorite job–teaching young men and women what he loved to do! As he worked with these college students, he taught them how to build buildings, but while doing so, he also encouraged them to build their lives for eternity. IWU Memories and Homecoming

Hey there, Titan Alums,
It is almost here, Homecoming 2017! Some of my fondest IWU memories were made at the football stadium cheering our mighty men of the gridiron on to victory; at every home game, but especially, at Homecoming! Standing up and belting out that “Fight Song,” accompanied by the awesome band, after each touchdown. Can you feel it? Do you remember? You can relive that excitement again!
October 13 -15th, Homecoming, 2017, please, come. If you send me your favorite Wesleyan memory, I will post it here in the newsletter. Plenty of things to see and do that weekend. Check out the one highlighted below:
If you are still deciding on which events you want to attend during Homecoming, the International RSO Fair is highly recommended. It will be on Saturday (10/14) at the Hansen Student Center, Center Court from 11 am – 1 pm. Come learn more about our multicultural registered student organizations and enjoy activities and musical performances. A light lunch will be provided, so please register either online or by phone by 10/8! You can visit the Homecoming Facebook page or the International RSO Fair Facebook event for more information.
