{"id":42,"date":"2008-10-01T16:43:02","date_gmt":"2008-10-01T21:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/?p=42"},"modified":"2008-10-01T16:43:02","modified_gmt":"2008-10-01T21:43:02","slug":"the-7th-annual-amesmilner-visiting-author-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/the-7th-annual-amesmilner-visiting-author-program\/","title":{"rendered":"The 7th Annual Ames\/Milner Visiting Author Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ames Library is pleased to announce that author Tim O\u2019Brien has been selected for the 7th Annual Ames\/Milner Visiting Author Program<\/p>\n<p>Mr. O&#8217;Brien will be on campus on Thursday, October 23rd from 2:00 &#8211; 3:00 in the Center Court, Hansen Student Center.\u00a0 The evening&#8217;s presentation will be from 7:00 &#8211; 8:00 in Braden Auditorium, Bone Student Center, at Illinois State University.\u00a0 A book signing will follow the evening talk in the Barnes &amp; Noble College Book Store at ISU.<\/p>\n<p>Tim O&#8217;Brien has been hailed as \u201cthe best American writer of his generation\u201d (<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>). The author of eight books, O\u2019Brien received the National Book Award in Fiction in 1979 for his novel <em>Going After Cacciato<\/em>.\u00a0 In 2005 <em>The Things They Carried<\/em> was named by the <em>New York Times<\/em> as one of the twenty best books of the last quarter century.\u00a0 It received the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award in fiction and was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The French edition of <em>The Things They Carried<\/em> received the prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger, and the title story was selected by John Updike for inclusion in <em>The Best American Short Stories of the Century<\/em>.\u00a0<em> In the Lake of the Woods<\/em>, published in 1994, was chosen by <em>Time <\/em>magazine as the best novel of that year.
