Earlier this month, IWU librarians Meg Miner and Scott Walter took part in a two-day workshop hosted by Ithaka S&R<\/a> for institutions participating in the upcoming, international study of teaching with primary sources<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In this study, participating institutions, including IWU,\nWilliams College, Brown University, Dartmouth College, University of Virginia,\nIndiana University, University of Sheffield (U.K.), Lafayette College, Yale\nUniversity, and others, will explore how \u201c[teaching] undergraduates with\nprimary sources promotes student engagement and critical thinking skills and is\na key ingredient in the current pedagogical push toward \u2018inquiry-based\u2019 or \u2018research-led\u2019\nlearning.\u201d Given the history of instructional collaboration among Ames Library\nfaculty and colleagues in academic programs across the curriculum in information\nliteracy instruction<\/a>, writing-intensive instruction, and service learning,\nIWU is in an excellent position both to learn from local research set within\nthis global context, and to provide examples of \u201cbest practice\u201d to colleagues\nwho will employ the results of this international study to inform their own\nteaching and learning programs, especially around media literacy, digital\nliteracy, and artifactual (or \u201cprimary-source\u201d) literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During Fall 2019, the IWU research team will be conducting\ninterviews with a small number of campus faculty (tenure-system, visiting, or\nadjunct) who make effective use of, or take innovative approaches to the use\nof, primary source materials in their teaching. While the focus for the study\nis in the humanities and social sciences, our team will consider faculty from\nany department who wish to participate in the study when making our final\nselection about who to include in the participant pool (according to guidelines\nprovided to all participating institutions by Ithaka).<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you would like to learn more about this study, or to add\nyour name to the list of potential participants in the study currently being\nreviewed for inclusion, please contact Meg\nMiner<\/a>, University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian.
