{"id":2370,"date":"2018-04-12T12:40:54","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T17:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/?p=2370"},"modified":"2018-04-12T12:50:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-12T17:50:33","slug":"national-library-week-ames-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/national-library-week-ames-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"National Library Week: Ames Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University librarian Karen Schmidt explains the #AmesAdvantage in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pantagraph.com\/news\/local\/education\/shh-academic-libraries-adapt-to-changing-needs\/article_dccad884-3c88-52d5-84b9-cbd70384aa73.html\">this recent article from The Pantagraph<\/a>!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Pointing to an area outside of her first floor office in Ames Library, IWU librarian Karen Schmidt said, \u201cWhen I came here 11 years ago, shelves were filled, end to end, with unbound periodicals.\u201d Now, she noted, only a small area is devoted to printed periodicals.<\/p>\n<p>But despite how libraries have changed, Schmidt said, \u201cAt<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">\u00a0the end of the day, it&#8217;s still about critical thinking, finding good resources and helping students become part of the scholarly conversation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One thing that&#8217;s been lost to some degree with the increasing use of digital rather than printed materials is what&#8217;s sometimes called \u201cserendipitous discovery\u201d \u2014 material randomly stumbled across while searching through stacks of books or an old-fashioned card catalog.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Schmidt said, when a student picked up a printed journal for a particular article, they might find related, helpful material in the same journal.
