Others are words that have been stretched into more parts of speech than originally intended &#8212; like when &#8220;trend&#8221; became a verb (&#8220;It&#8217;s trending worldwide&#8221;). Others still have emerged as we adapt our language to new technologies; think &#8220;crowdfunding,&#8221; &#8220;selfie,&#8221; &#8220;cyberbullying.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2017\/06\/AAEAAQAAAAAAAAOwAAAAJDZmYTgyN2UwLWRlYjgtNDc1NC1hM2EzLTc5NDQyNWNmMWY0ZA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2227\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2017\/06\/AAEAAQAAAAAAAAOwAAAAJDZmYTgyN2UwLWRlYjgtNDc1NC1hM2EzLTc5NDQyNWNmMWY0ZA-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2017\/06\/AAEAAQAAAAAAAAOwAAAAJDZmYTgyN2UwLWRlYjgtNDc1NC1hM2EzLTc5NDQyNWNmMWY0ZA-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2017\/06\/AAEAAQAAAAAAAAOwAAAAJDZmYTgyN2UwLWRlYjgtNDc1NC1hM2EzLTc5NDQyNWNmMWY0ZA.jpg 698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>You might notice how many of these &#8220;new&#8221; words are actually just appropriated, meaning they are pre-existing words that are combined or given entirely new meanings. For example, &#8220;social network&#8221; became a word in the <a href=\"https:\/\/login.proxy.iwu.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/www.oed.com\/\">Oxford English Dictionary<\/a> back in 1973, referring to the physical activity of networking in a social atmosphere.
