This newest collection of 19th century portraits includes military brass, senators, socialites and<\/p>\n<p>even babies. These are a handful of Washington, D.C., subjects photographed by Charles Milton Bell (1848\u201393)\u00a0during the last quarter of the 19th century. The Library of Congress recently digitized more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/print\/coll\/c-m-bell-studio-photographs.html?loclr=blogloc\">25,000 glass plate negatives produced by\u00a0Bell<\/a> and his successors between 1873 and the early years of the 20th century. The photographs document the capital city\u2019s social and political history\u2014and also its fashions and preoccupations.<\/p>\n<p>They are highlighting a selection of the C.M. Bell photos this month under the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/#reuse\">free to use and reuse\u201d feature on the Library\u2019s home page<\/a>.
