It was the last of the &#8220;<a title=\"List of Apollo mission types\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Apollo_mission_types\">H missions<\/a>,&#8221; targeted landings with two-day stays on the Moon with two lunar <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Extra-vehicular activity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extra-vehicular_activity\">EVAs<\/a>, or moonwalks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2015\/02\/apollo-14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1096\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2015\/02\/apollo-14-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"apollo 14\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2015\/02\/apollo-14-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2015\/02\/apollo-14-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/library\/files\/2015\/02\/apollo-14.jpg 1960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Commander <a title=\"Alan Shepard\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Shepard\">Alan Shepard<\/a>, <a title=\"Apollo Command\/Service Module\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_Command\/Service_Module#Command_Module_.28CM.29\">Command Module Pilot<\/a> <a title=\"Stuart Roosa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stuart_Roosa\">Stuart Roosa<\/a>, and <a title=\"Apollo Lunar Module\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_Lunar_Module\">Lunar Module Pilot<\/a> <a title=\"Edgar Mitchell\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edgar_Mitchell\">Edgar Mitchell<\/a> launched on their nine-day mission on January 31, 1971 at 4:04:02 pm local time after a 40 minute, 2 second delay due to launch site weather restrictions, the first such delay in the Apollo program.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_14#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> Shepard and Mitchell made their lunar landing on February 5 in the <a title=\"Fra Mauro formation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fra_Mauro_formation\">Fra Mauro formation<\/a>; this had originally been the target of the aborted <a title=\"Apollo 13\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_13\">Apollo 13<\/a> mission. During the two lunar <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Extra-vehicular activity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extra-vehicular_activity\">EVAs<\/a>, 42 kilograms (93\u00a0lb) of <a title=\"Moon rock\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moon_rock\">Moon rocks<\/a> were collected and several<a title=\"Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_Lunar_Surface_Experiments_Package\">surface experiments<\/a>, including seismic studies, were performed. Shepard famously hit two <a title=\"Golf ball\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golf_ball\">golf balls<\/a> on the lunar surface with a makeshift club he had brought from <a title=\"Earth\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth\">Earth<\/a>. Shepard and Mitchell spent about 33 hours on the Moon, with about 9\u00bd hours on EVA.<\/p>\n<p>While Shepard and Mitchell were on the surface, Roosa remained in <a title=\"Lunar orbit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lunar_orbit\">lunar orbit<\/a> aboard the <a title=\"Apollo Command\/Service Module\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_Command\/Service_Module\">Command\/Service Module<\/a><i>Kitty Hawk<\/i>, performing scientific experiments and photographing the Moon, including the landing site of the future <a title=\"Apollo 16\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_16\">Apollo 16<\/a>mission. He took several hundred seeds on the mission, many of which were <a title=\"Germination\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germination\">germinated<\/a> on return, resulting in the so-called <a title=\"Moon tree\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moon_tree\">Moon trees<\/a>.
