His tribute to his father (and teacher), Wesley Updike, did win the National Book Award, after all.<\/p>\n<p>Who took the #1 spot, according to the site&#8217;s algorithm?<\/p>\n<p><em>Candide<\/em>, by Voltaire, with Wilkie Collins&#8217;\u00a0<em>The Woman in White\u00a0<\/em>coming in second, and Muriel Spark&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie\u00a0<\/em>placing third.
