Ganeshananthan and Whitney Terrell, <strong>Ann Beattie<\/strong> talked about her new collection of essays, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/More-Say-Appreciations-Ann-Beattie\/dp\/1567927521\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=32G8AMRMOJ868&amp;keywords=ann+beattie+essays&amp;qid=1687024145&amp;sprefix=ann+beattie+essays%2Caps%2C212&amp;sr=8-1\">More to Say: Essays and Appreciations<\/a><\/em>, which contains an essat on &#8220;John Updike&#8217;s Sense of Wonder.&#8221; Beattie was the keynote speaker at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.460655409272&amp;type=3\">1st Biennial John Updike Society Conference<\/a> in Reading, Pa., back in 2010, and a version of her talk\u2014and this chapter\u2014was published by <em>The John Updike Review<\/em> in 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lit Hub-hosted interview series noted that in the interview Beattie discussed &#8220;her recent LitHub essay about Donald Barthelme\u2019s short story &#8216;The Balloon&#8217; and the Chinese spy balloon. She also talks about her recently published first collection of essays, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/132\/9781567927528\" target=\"_blank\"><em>More to Say: Essays and Appreciations<\/em><\/a>, in which she writes about the work of authors, photographers, and artists she admires, including Elmore Leonard, Sally Mann, John Loengard, and her own husband, visual artist Lincoln Perry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Beattie explains why as a nonfiction writer, she prefers close looking and reading; considers defamiliarization in the hands of Barthelme and Alice Munro; analyzes former visual artist John Updike\u2019s depiction of the natural world; and reflects on developing increased comfort with writing about visual art.
