Registration, which will be open until September 12, is $25 for the day, including a box lunch. The Society reserves the right to close registration if the numbers grow too large. The special seminar at Alvernia includes three pedagogy sessions, two sessions open to the public, and one session open to members (and teachers) only.<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>8-8:50\u2014Registration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>9-9:50am\u2014Plenary Session:<\/strong><span> &#8220;<\/span>Updike in Pennsylvania.&#8221; Jack De Bellis (program director) and Dave Silcox (site director)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>10-10:50am\u2014Family panel:<\/strong> Mary Weatherall (Updike\u2019s first wife) and Updike children Elizabeth Cobblah, Miranda Updike, and Michael Updike; James Plath, moderator<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>11:00-12:15\u2014Pedagogy Session I:<\/strong><span> <strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u2019Ex-Basketball Player\u2019: Approaches to Teaching Updike\u2019s Most Anthologized Poem and suggested segments from the Rabbit novels.\u201d\u00a0James Plath (Illinois Wesleyan University)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>12:30-1:45\u00a0 Box Lunch<\/strong>, and a chance to mingle and talk with other teachers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>2:00-3:00\u2014Plenary Session II: <\/strong><span> \u201cHeadier Stuff: Resources for Teaching \u2018A&amp;P,\u2019 \u2018Pigeon Feathers,\u2019 and &#8216;Separating.&#8217;\u201dJames Schiff (University of Cincinnati)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>3:15-4:15\u2014Plenary Session III: <\/strong>\u201cTeaching Updike\u2019s Lesser-Known Short Fiction.\u201d Marshall Boswell (Rhodes College)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>4:30-5:30\u2014Keynote speakers Ann Beattie and Lincoln Perry.<\/strong> Ann Beattie is Edgar Allan Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia and a distinguished writer of fiction, and Lincoln Perry is a renowned artist whose paintings and sculptures have been influenced by John Updike\u2019s fiction.
