The <em>Newburyport News<\/em> posted a piece titled &#8220;Joppa&#8217;s penguins go into hibernation&#8221;\u2014about four &#8220;beloved and iconic penguins that have shown up at Joppa Flats during the summer months&#8221; and &#8220;make their way &#8216;south&#8217; to Updike&#8217;s home, for the winter.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2023\/01\/Screen-Shot-2023-01-14-at-3.36.06-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"630\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2023\/01\/Screen-Shot-2023-01-14-at-3.36.06-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2023\/01\/Screen-Shot-2023-01-14-at-3.36.06-PM.png 630w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2023\/01\/Screen-Shot-2023-01-14-at-3.36.06-PM-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2023\/01\/Screen-Shot-2023-01-14-at-3.36.06-PM-425x300.png 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Reporter Ashlyn Giroux asked Updike about the penguins, and got the full story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe kids were sort of middle childhood, like 8 and 10, and we were coming back from a soccer game in Lynn or Revere, one of those places, and we stopped at Newbury Comics and somehow, probably as an impulse buy, I thought we\u2019d buy the penguin along with the Yugioh cards, and so we had this penguin and I said \u2018Oh, I really should put it on an iceberg and put it out there,&#8217; said Updike. The kids didn\u2019t really respond much, and then I thought, \u2018I don\u2019t wanna be that dad who makes a promise or says something and doesn\u2019t follow through.\u2019 So, I went and got three more penguins and built the iceberg out of styrofoam and then put it out there, and the kids sort of looked at it for three seconds and went back to what they were doing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After moving to Newbury, Giroux said Updike put the penguins out on the marsh behind his home to the amusement of a few neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I moved down here to Newbury, I brought the penguins and said \u2018OK that\u2019s the end of that.\u2019 But, all my former neighbors on Water Street kept saying \u2018where are the penguins?
