That&#8217;s no doubt because of Jack Nicholson&#8217;s over-the-top performance as Darryl Van Horne and director George Miller&#8217;s decision to go <em>Beetlejuice<\/em> wild with Updike&#8217;s story of three divorcees in a small New England town where sexual politics and witchy mischief take center stage. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/10\/WOE-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"455\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/10\/WOE-poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5762\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/10\/WOE-poster.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/10\/WOE-poster-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 1987 Warner Bros. film starred Cher as Alexandra, Susan Sarandon as Jane, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Sukie, with Veronica Cartwright playing Felicia and Richard Jenkins playing Clyde. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editor David C.L. Bauer said that readers could choose from a list of &#8220;100 movies of all genres or add their own.&#8221;  <em>The Witches of Eastwick<\/em> was the second film cited in the article, right after <em>It&#8217;s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown<\/em> and ahead of <em>The Ring, Coraline, Fright Night, Goosebumps, Evil Dead, Young Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon,<\/em> and <em>Hocus<\/em> <em>Pocus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rotten Tomatoes critics weren&#8217;t quite as enthusiastic.
