Another Dan<\/strong><\/p>\n I go to the library again and check out my old friend,<\/p>\n the late John Updike. I actually own most of his books, but<\/p>\n seeing him here on these public shelves gives me some sense<\/p>\n he’s still doing well\u2014not breathing, obviously, but circulating.<\/p>\n The once we met, inscribing my book, he wrote For Dan, Best Wishes<\/em><\/p>\n while saying, and I quote, “Another Dan\u2014more Dans than you can<\/p>\n shake a stick at.” His wild eyebrows were, if you can imagine,<\/p>\n even wilder in person. I think of this whenever my wife insists<\/p>\n I sit still for a trimming.
