{"id":5613,"date":"2022-07-16T10:30:23","date_gmt":"2022-07-16T15:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=5613"},"modified":"2022-07-22T09:38:43","modified_gmt":"2022-07-22T14:38:43","slug":"historic-ipswich-marks-the-updike-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2022\/07\/16\/historic-ipswich-marks-the-updike-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Ipswich marks the Updike years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Shillington, Pa. isn&#8217;t the only community that&#8217;s able to claim John Updike as a &#8220;native son.&#8221; Ipswich, Mass. also deserves a share of the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and Gordon Harris of <a href=\"https:\/\/historicipswich.org\/2021\/03\/05\/john-updike-ipswich\/\">HistoricIpswich.org<\/a> explains why: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Updikes lived in the Ipswich area for 17 years in three different houses, where John and Mary were active in community affairs and Updike was working in Ipswich when <em>Couples<\/em> put him on the cover of <em>Time<\/em> magazine and in the international spotlight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Like Ipswich, Tarbox [the town named in Couples] was a small coastal town founded in 1634. Its streets were lined with 17th century saltboxes, the downtown street had three banks and a Woolworths.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris notes that Updike, at the age of 32, became the youngest person ever elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
