{"id":5340,"date":"2022-01-27T09:38:52","date_gmt":"2022-01-27T15:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=5340"},"modified":"2022-01-27T09:38:53","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T15:38:53","slug":"marking-john-updikes-passing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2022\/01\/27\/marking-john-updikes-passing\/","title":{"rendered":"Marking John Updike&#8217;s passing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Thirteen years ago, on Jan. 27, 2009, BBC-radio phoned John Updike Society president James Plath to get his reaction to Updike&#8217;s passing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was shocking news to Plath, whose on-air response was less than composed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Updike&#8217;s death from lung cancer was a surprise to many who loved and looked forward to reading a new book from him every year for the previous five decades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/01\/Dogwood-tree.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/01\/Dogwood-tree.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/01\/Dogwood-tree.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2022\/01\/Dogwood-tree-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Updike&#8217;s beloved dogwood tree, in bloom<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Telegraph<\/em> (U.K.) called him &#8220;one of America&#8217;s greatest and most prolific literary icons, acclaimed for his precise, intimate style of writing,&#8221; while the BBC acknowledged that &#8220;John Updike&#8217;s novels, magisterial dissections of the soul of post-World War II middle America, placed him at the very pinnacle of his profession. . . . Whether writing novels, short stories, essays, or poems, John Updike&#8217;s work always seemed to find the pulse of modern America.&#8221; Closer to home, <em>The New York Times<\/em> praised Updike for being &#8220;kaleidoscopically gifted&#8221; and called him &#8220;the great chronicler of middle-class America . . . .
