{"id":5170,"date":"2021-07-14T08:39:56","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T13:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=5170"},"modified":"2021-07-14T08:42:07","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T13:42:07","slug":"u-and-f","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2021\/07\/14\/u-and-f\/","title":{"rendered":"U and F"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Anything goes these days when it comes to online journalism, partly because so much of what passes for news is opinion posted by untrained non-professionals, but also partly because times have changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-14-at-8.33.39-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-14-at-8.33.39-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5171\" width=\"328\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-14-at-8.33.39-AM.png 550w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-14-at-8.33.39-AM-304x300.png 304w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-14-at-8.33.39-AM-300x296.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Just not <em>The Times. <\/em>Though a recently posted <em>Medium<\/em> story concerned <em>The New York Times<\/em>, it&#8217;s doubtful that the beacon of the news-gathering profession would run the headline <a href=\"https:\/\/gen.medium.com\/a-brief-history-of-fuck-in-the-new-york-times-993d08c31344\">&#8220;A Brief History of &#8216;Fuck&#8217; in The New York Times.&#8221; <\/a>But there it is, casually screaming at you with the subhead &#8220;Also fucked, fucking, fucker, motherfucker, and Airbnfuckingbs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Updike fans might imagine, the author who helped push the boundaries of acceptability in literary fiction and poetry factors into the discussion. But he wasn&#8217;t the <em>first<\/em> to slip a naughty word past <em>Times<\/em> editors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As it turns out, a majority of the <em>Times&#8217; fucks<\/em> over the years have slipped in by means of book excerpts, mostly novels\u2014including what appears to be the first, in 1984, from John Irving&#8217;s <em>A Widow for One Year<\/em>:  &#8216;Yet not even then would he regret having fucked Ruth&#8217;s mother.&#8217; According to my archival search, the second <em>fuck<\/em> didn&#8217;t appear for another 13 years, until 1997\u2014a John Updike character recalling that when he was &#8216;courting&#8217; his wife he&#8217;d been &#8216;attracted to her way of saying &#8220;fuck&#8221; instead of a softer expression.&#8217; The third appearance, in 1998, is the first figurative use\u2014funny, given that it&#8217;s from the special prosecutor&#8217;s report on President Clinton&#8217;s sex scandal, Monica Lewinsky recorded saying she wished he would &#8216;acknowledge . . . that he helped fuck up my life.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writer Kurt Andersen did not say what naughty word(s) he intends to search next. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anything goes these days when it comes to online journalism, partly because so much of what passes for news is opinion posted by untrained non-professionals, but also partly because times have changed.
