{"id":5104,"date":"2021-04-04T22:49:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-05T03:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=5104"},"modified":"2021-04-04T22:49:06","modified_gmt":"2021-04-05T03:49:06","slug":"maverick-philosopher-on-updikes-seven-stanzas-at-easter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2021\/04\/04\/maverick-philosopher-on-updikes-seven-stanzas-at-easter\/","title":{"rendered":"Maverick Philosopher on Updike&#8217;s Seven Stanzas at Easter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time of year John Updike&#8217;s poem <a href=\"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2021\/04\/john-updike-seven-stanzas-at-easter.html\">&#8220;Seven Stanzas at Easter&#8221;<\/a> is often reprinted and just as often pondered.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent to tackle the poem is the <strong>Maverick Philosopher<\/strong>, who is listed among <em>The Times <\/em>of London&#8217;s 100 Best Blogs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-04-at-9.54.02-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5105\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-04-at-9.54.02-PM-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-04-at-9.54.02-PM-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-04-at-9.54.02-PM.png 311w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Bill Vallicella (aka Maverick Philosopher) writes, &#8220;Given what we know from <a href=\"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2021\/04\/john-updikes-christianity.html\">yesterday&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0Updike entry, the suspicion obtrudes that, while Updike clearly understands the Resurrection as orthodoxy understands it, his interest in it is merely\u00a0<em>aesthetic<\/em>\u00a0in Kierkegaard&#8217;s sense, and not\u00a0<em>ethical<\/em>\u00a0in the Dane&#8217;s sense, which suspicion comports well with the charge that Updike radically divorced Christian theology from Christian ethics.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"entry-body\">\n<p>&#8220;Or perhaps, as a Protestant, Updike thinks that since God in Christ did all the work of atonement, he needn&#8217;t do anything such as reform his life and struggle and strive for metanoia but can freely enjoy himself in the arms and partake of the charms of other men&#8217;s wives. \u00a0Am I being fair?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Is he?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-footer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This time of year John Updike&#8217;s poem &#8220;Seven Stanzas at Easter&#8221; is often reprinted and just as often pondered.
