Updike was mentioned again, but this time not for something light, airy, and Updike clever.<\/p>\n<p>Writer-journalist <strong>Julie Myerson<\/strong> (&#8220;Living with Teenagers,&#8221; <em>Sleepwalking<\/em>, <em>Something Might Happen<\/em>), listed Updike&#8217;s Rabbit tetralogy as her literal &#8220;must-read&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rachel Cusk\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"ydpca929dccu-underline ydpca929dccin-body-link--immersive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianbookshop.com\/kudos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Kudos<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Faber) is one of the most astoundingly original and necessary books I\u2019ve ever read. It made me laugh, think and cry. She\u2019s my friend, but I recommend it without apology: I envy anyone who hasn\u2019t read it yet. I was startled, but also very moved, by the almost abrasive directness of Rose Tremain\u2019s memoir\u00a0<a class=\"ydpca929dccu-underline ydpca929dccin-body-link--immersive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianbookshop.com\/rosie-558694.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Rosie<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Chatto &amp; Windus). It did exactly what memoirs ought to do: made me want to rush straight back to her fiction. My ideal holiday (a bit of a fantasy at the moment) would therefore be a fortnight in Rome with all of Tremain on a Kindle, along with John Updike\u2019s\u00a0<em><a class=\"ydpca929dccu-underline ydpca929dccin-body-link--immersive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianbookshop.com\/rabbit-run.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rabbit<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Penguin) quartet \u2013 which people have been ordering me to read for years \u2013 as well as\u00a0<a class=\"ydpca929dccu-underline ydpca929dccin-body-link--immersive enhancr_card_1150365742\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianbookshop.com\/motherhood-609888.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Motherhood<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Harvill Secker) by Sheila Heti, which I\u2019ve been hoarding, and\u00a0<a class=\"ydpca929dccu-underline ydpca929dccin-body-link--immersive enhancr_card_1376894856\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianbookshop.com\/never-anyone-but-you-572096.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Never Anyone But You<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Corsair) by the unfailingly brilliant Rupert Thomson.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When in Rome . . . read John Updike?<\/p>\n<p>The artwork is a detail from a Leon Edler illustration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Guardian published another summer reading list\u2014&#8220;Best summer books 2018, as picked by writers and cultural figures &#8211; part two&#8221;\u2014in which everyone shares their reading agenda for the sun-and-fun months.
