Let&#8217;s give him the last word and then, let the off-season begin!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"episode_title\">\n<h2>Baseball<\/h2>\n<div class=\"author\">\n<div><i>by\u00a0John Updike<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"work\">\n<div>It looks easy from a distance,<br \/>\neasy and lazy, even,<br \/>\nuntil you stand up to the plate<br \/>\nand see the fastball sailing inside,<br \/>\nan inch from your chin,<br \/>\nor circle in the outfield<br \/>\nstraining to get a bead<br \/>\non a small black dot<br \/>\na city block or more high,<br \/>\na dark star that could fall<br \/>\non your head like a leaden meteor.<\/p>\n<p>The grass, the dirt, the deadly hops<br \/>\nbetween your feet and overeager glove:<br \/>\nfootball can be learned,<br \/>\nand basketball finessed, but<br \/>\nthere is no hiding from baseball<br \/>\nthe fact that some are chosen<br \/>\nand some are not\u2014those whose mitts<br \/>\nfeel too left-handed,<br \/>\nwho are scared at third base<br \/>\nof the pulled line drive,<br \/>\nand at first base are scared<br \/>\nof the shortstop&#8217;s wild throw<br \/>\nthat stretches you out like a gutted deer.<\/p>\n<p>There is nowhere to hide when the ball&#8217;s<br \/>\nspotlight swivels your way,<br \/>\nand the chatter around you falls still,<br \/>\nand the mothers on the sidelines,<br \/>\nyour own among them, hold their breaths,<br \/>\nand you whiff on a terrible pitch<br \/>\nor in the infield achieve<br \/>\nsomething with the ball so<br \/>\nridiculous you blush for years.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s easy to do.
