{"id":4157,"date":"2017-08-20T10:36:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T15:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=4157"},"modified":"2017-08-20T10:37:13","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T15:37:13","slug":"music-reviewer-cites-updike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2017\/08\/20\/music-reviewer-cites-updike\/","title":{"rendered":"Musician cites Updike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-20-at-9.33.44-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4158\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-20-at-9.33.44-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-20-at-9.33.44-AM.png 230w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-20-at-9.33.44-AM-199x300.png 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a>John Updike had a reputation for finding just the right word or phrase to describe something, and one of his spot-on descriptions was recently cited by <em>Treble<\/em> &#8220;zine&#8221; reviewer Jeff Terich.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treblezine.com\/36463-premiere-biblical-fugue-state\/\">&#8220;Premiere: Biblical space out on new track &#8216;Fugue State,'&#8221;<\/a> a review from the album <strong><em>The City That Always Sleeps<\/em><\/strong>, Terich notes its &#8220;tense build-up that releases with an atmospheric, almost shoegazey texture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Terich quotes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblicalband.com\">Toronto band<\/a>&#8216;s lead vocalist and bassist, <strong>Nick Sewell<\/strong>, who implies that Updike was an inspiration:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were determined to explore some new sounds for this record and &#8216;Fugue State&#8217; definitely falls into that category. More than any other song on the record, it really operates with a sense of open space. That gave us plenty of room to experiment, specifically with the vocals which turned out to have a sort of morbid \u2018Pet Sounds\u2019 vibe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLyrically, the song is a classic rumination on existential dread\u2014the type you might have in the middle of the night after waking from a bad dream. There\u2019s a poem by John Updike called <a href=\"http:\/\/thebestamericanpoetry.typepad.com\/the_best_american_poetry\/2009\/01\/perfection-wasted-by-john-updike.html\">&#8216;Perfection Wasted&#8217;<\/a> that I kept coming back to. It rides a fine line between dry, sardonic wit and tenderness. Definitely the qualities I was hoping to capture with \u2018Fugue State.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Perfection Wasted&#8221; was included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Best-American-Poetry-2016\/dp\/150112756X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1475091431&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>The Best American Poetry 2016<\/em><\/a>, edited by Edward Hirsch and David Lehman.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Updike had a reputation for finding just the right word or phrase to describe something, and one of his spot-on descriptions was recently cited by Treble &#8220;zine&#8221; reviewer Jeff Terich.
