  3. The Interpretation of Dreams<\/em> by Sigmund Freud<\/li>\n
  4. The Prince<\/em> by Niccolo Machiavelli<\/li>\n
  5. On the Origin of Species<\/em> by Charles Darwin<\/li>\n
  6. Walden<\/em> by Henry David Thoreau<\/li>\n
  7. Pens\u00e9es<\/em> by Blaise Pascal<\/li>\n
  8. The Republic by Plato<\/em><\/li>\n
  9. The Complete Works of Plato<\/em> by Plato<\/li>\n
  10. The Diary of a Young Girl<\/em> by Anne Frank<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Among fiction writers, Virginia Woolf (A Room of One’s Own<\/em>, 1929) placed the highest at #31, followed by Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood<\/em> (1966, #42). Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast<\/em> clocked in at #64, but you’d have to add a digit to that to get to Updike’s entry: \u00a0Self-Consciousness (1989), at #638.<\/p>\n
