The John Updike Society has held four successful conferences,\u00a0and the upcoming Fifth Biennial John Updike Society Conference<\/strong> is already shaping up to be one of the best. Below is a preliminary schedule for the conference. Registration information will follow shortly. Note that “on own” means that for logistical reasons the cost is not included in the basic academic conference registration. Note too that the day trip will be an additional cost. Most people in Belgrade speak some English, but bilingual graduate students will be available to help\u00a0as guides.\u00a0Those wishing to share research should see the Call for Papers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Optional (additional cost) all-day bus tour of Serbian sites: Oplenac (St George\u2019s Church, Karadjordje\u2019s Museum), Viminacium (Roman ruins, mammoth park), and Smederevo Fortress (pictured below; capital of Serbia in the Middle Ages, built 1427-30), with a lunch stop (on own); those who aren\u2019t taking the tour have a free day to see sites on their own or relax in Belgrade.<\/p>\n
