How can April be the cruelest month when it’s National Poetry Month? And The Atlantic<\/em> <\/strong>teases readers with a reminder that John Updike wasn’t just a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist. He was a pretty good poet as well.<\/p>\n

Exhibit A is this excerpt from Updike’s “Half Moon, Small Cloud”:<\/p>\n

For what is the moon, that it haunts us,
\nthis impudent companion immigrated.f
\nfrom the system’s less fortunate margins,
\nthe realm of dust collected in orbs?<\/p>\n
