Updike, of course, makes her list, along with Ovid (<em>Metamorphoses<\/em>) and Virgil (<em>The Georgics<\/em>), William Shakespeare (<em>Macbeth<\/em>), Leo Tolstoy (<em>Anna Karenina<\/em>), Gustav Flaubert (<em>Madame Bovary<\/em>), Edith Wharton (<em>The Age of Innocence<\/em>), Virginia Woolf (<em>Mrs. Dalloway<\/em>), Edward Albee (<em>Who&#8217;s Afraid of Virginia Woolf<\/em>), Alice Walker (<em>The Color Purple<\/em>), Stephen King (<em>The Shining<\/em>), and Margaret Atwood (<em>The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Of the Updike selection,\u00a0<em>Too Far to Go<\/em>, she writes,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d be remiss if I omitted something by Updike, who captured the sensual disarray of mid-twentieth-century couples like nobody else.
