She had commissioned\u00a0three sisters who operate an arts business called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turquoisecreate.com\">Turquoise<\/a>\u2014Melissa, Ashley and Courtney Reed\u2014but the sisters weren&#8217;t familiar enough with Updike to have painted\u00a0him initially in their mural.<\/p>\n<p>As <em>Reading Eagle<\/em> correspondent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readingeagle.com\/money\/article\/turquoise-grows-from-pencil-box-to-national-canvas#sthash.jeI3fep2.dpuf\">Carole Duran reports<\/a>, &#8220;Courtney was asked to include John Updike, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author who was born in Shillington. She wasn&#8217;t born yet when Updike was publishing his &#8216;Rabbit&#8217; series, and was not familiar with the writer. After her research, she painted the book jacket of <em>Rabbit, Run<\/em>.&#8221; Courtney, 27, the youngest of the sisters,\u00a0<em>was<\/em> born before\u00a0the\u00a0last of the high-profile Rabbit novels, <em>Rabbit at Rest<\/em>, was published in 1990, but it only goes to prove that <a href=\"http:\/\/johnupdikechildhoodhome.com\">The John Updike Childhood Home<\/a> might be needed to keep Updike alive for future generations of Berks Countians.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t squint too hard to locate the original hardcover dust jacket.
