{"id":3193,"date":"2015-11-14T09:41:43","date_gmt":"2015-11-14T15:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=3193"},"modified":"2015-11-14T09:41:43","modified_gmt":"2015-11-14T15:41:43","slug":"blogger-takes-exception-with-selected-poems-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2015\/11\/14\/blogger-takes-exception-with-selected-poems-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Blogger takes exception with Selected Poems review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On <em>The New Yorker &amp; Me<\/em> blog, a writer posting under the moniker &#8220;Capedrifter&#8221; was bothered enough by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/11\/02\/boston-boys\">Dan Chiasson&#8217;s <em>New Yorker<\/em> review<\/a> of Updike&#8217;s <em>Selected Poems<\/em> that he penned a rebuttal.<\/p>\n<p>Capedrifter thought Chiasson&#8217;s review inconsistent and questionable (and in this, he&#8217;s probably not alone). &#8220;Yes, it strongly recommends the new <em>Selected Poems<\/em> . . . And yes, it calls &#8216;Endpoint&#8217; &#8216;a perfect sonnet sequence.&#8217; But it also says things like, &#8216;The problem is that all of his poems about strain, discomfort, and regret cheer him, and we don&#8217;t associate cheer with great poetry,&#8217; and &#8216;Updike&#8217;s poems level our intrinsic ranking of occasions&#8217; and &#8216;Vocabulary is the most overrated element of good writing, or so these poems tempt us to conclude.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are questionable criticisms,&#8221; Capedrifter says, then\u00a0proceeds to disprove all three\u00a0criticisms by citing\u00a0excerpts from the <em>Selected Poems<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thenewyorkerandme.blogspot.com\/2015\/11\/in-praise-of-john-updikes-poetry-contra.html\">&#8220;In Praise of John Updike&#8217;s Poetry (Contra Dan Chiasson)&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On The New Yorker &amp; Me blog, a writer posting under the moniker &#8220;Capedrifter&#8221; was bothered enough by Dan Chiasson&#8217;s New Yorker review of Updike&#8217;s Selected Poems that he penned a rebuttal.
