{"id":2735,"date":"2015-01-17T21:34:57","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T03:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=2735"},"modified":"2015-01-17T21:53:19","modified_gmt":"2015-01-18T03:53:19","slug":"in-memoriam-robert-weatherall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2015\/01\/17\/in-memoriam-robert-weatherall\/","title":{"rendered":"In Memoriam:  Robert Weatherall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2015\/01\/CN13227317_232018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2736\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2015\/01\/CN13227317_232018.jpg\" alt=\"CN13227317_232018\" width=\"72\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>We learned belatedly and are saddened to report that John Updike Society member <strong>Robert Weatherall<\/strong> died on December 26 at his home in Ipswich,\u00a0Mass.<\/p>\n<p>Members will remember Bob from the very first conference at Alvernia University in 2010,\u00a0when he and Mary Weatherall (Updike&#8217;s first wife) mingled with registrants and displayed a graciousness that was topped only by their opening their Ipswich house to us for our second conference\u2014even mounting an impressive display of Updike materials, especially for us. Those who interacted\u00a0with Bob\u00a0were touched by how genuine and gentlemanly he was, and how giving.<\/p>\n<p>His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/wickedlocal-ipswich\/obituary.aspx?n=robert-k-weatherall&amp;pid=173743107&amp;fhid=20796\">obituary in <em>The Ipswich Chronicle<\/em><\/a> recalls a full life that began in wartime Britain and had an impact on countless people: &#8220;He was a passionate advocate of education and was the first to work to ensure the the Foeffees of Little Neck honored William Payne&#8217;s 17th century gift to Ipswich students. He had an abiding interest in the public good, whether it be the welfare of the schoolchildren of Ipswich or access to and stewardship of open spaces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Members in the area can attend a\u00a0memorial that\u00a0be held at Ascension Memorial Church in Ipswich on January 31 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Essex County Greenbelt Association, 82 Eastern Ave., Essex, MA 01929, or to the Ipswich Music, Arts &amp; Drama Association, Inc., Box 449, Ipswich, MA \u00a001938.
