{"id":2656,"date":"2014-12-08T07:24:03","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T13:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=2656"},"modified":"2014-12-08T07:26:53","modified_gmt":"2014-12-08T13:26:53","slug":"updike-memoirs-and-bio-make-more-best-books-lists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2014\/12\/08\/updike-memoirs-and-bio-make-more-best-books-lists\/","title":{"rendered":"Updike memoir and bio make more best books lists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-08-at-7.20.06-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2657\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-08-at-7.20.06-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 7.20.06 AM\" width=\"252\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a>Adam Begley&#8217;s\u00a0highly regarded biography <em>Updike<\/em>\u00a0made\u00a0two more lists, and so did Updike&#8217;s own <em>Self-Consciousness<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Irish Times<\/em><\/strong> posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/books-of-the-year\/bert-wright-books-of-the-year-1.2027095#.VIOAZeK-aQw.twitter\">&#8220;Bert Wright: Books of the Year,&#8221;<\/a> a very short list in which Wright wrote, &#8220;Adam Begley\u2019s superb biography of my literary hero, <em>Updike<\/em> (Harper), achieved what all good literary biographies do, illuminating the life and the work while increasing one\u2019s affection for the subject all the more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Week<\/em><\/strong> published <a href=\"http:\/\/theweek.com\/article\/index\/273003\/laura-kipnis-6-favorite-books-about-wounded-masculinity\">&#8220;Laura Kipnis&#8217; 6 favorite books about wounded masculinity,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0in which &#8220;The author of Against Love recommends works by John Updike, Norman Mailer, and more.&#8221; Kipnis&#8217; most recent book, <em>Men: Notes from an Ongoing Investigation<\/em>, is spotlighted as is Updike&#8217;s memoir:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Self-Consciousness<\/em> by John Updike (Random House, $16). Would Updike have been such a fabulous writer if he weren&#8217;t afflicted with terrible psoriasis? And a stutter? According to Updike, they should be credited with whatever courage and originality he possessed. His shamelessness on the page distracted him from his real-life shame.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/strong> posted\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/dec\/04\/the-best-biographies-and-memoirs-of-2014\">&#8220;The best biographies and memoirs of 2014,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0an article by Paul Laity that features a great photo of Updike by Michael Brennan\/Corbis and these remarks about the Begley bio:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Adam Begley\u2019s admiring <em>Updike<\/em> (Harper) made it clear how assiduously the creator of Rabbit Angstrom mined his own life for his fiction.
