{"id":2600,"date":"2014-11-05T12:47:33","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T18:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=2600"},"modified":"2014-11-05T12:47:33","modified_gmt":"2014-11-05T18:47:33","slug":"on-teaching-the-centaur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2014\/11\/05\/on-teaching-the-centaur\/","title":{"rendered":"On teaching The Centaur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A revised version of\u00a0Adam Sexton&#8217;s presentation at the 3rd Biennial John Updike Society Conference was recently published in Issue #27 of <em>Post Road Magazine:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.postroadmag.com\/27\/recommends\/sexton.phtml\"><strong>&#8220;<em>The Centaur<\/em> by John Updike&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In it, he talks about teaching <em>The Centaur<\/em> to the\u00a0painting, fashion, photography, and architecture majors who were required to take his course at the Parsons School of Design.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Together my Parsons students and I moved slowly through the novel&#8217;s protean first chapter and another psychotic-seeming one in which Peter, chained to a rock, is visited in turn by schoolmates as well as the spirit of the town in which they live. We skimmed the chapter that was undiluted mythology and focused on the rest.
