Updike&#8217;s quotations, his pretentious index, and interpolated episodes of mythical narrative simply provide an irritating distraction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One has to wonder what Miller&#8217;s reaction was when <em>The Centaur<\/em> was awarded the National Book Award.
