{"id":2451,"date":"2014-09-12T18:17:29","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T23:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=2451"},"modified":"2014-09-12T18:24:54","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T23:24:54","slug":"updike-scores-a-1-on-this-200-best-american-novels-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2014\/09\/12\/updike-scores-a-1-on-this-200-best-american-novels-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Updike scores a 1 on this 200 Best American Novels list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Writing for PBS, Victoria Fleischer on September 11 posted an article titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/art\/have-you-read-the-200-best-american-novels\/\">&#8220;Have you read the 200 &#8216;best American novels&#8217;?&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She reported that a single individual &#8220;embarked on an experiment&#8221; and &#8220;committed to reading only American novels and decided to compile a list of the 100 best that were published between 1770 and 1985.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The architect of this plan was, well, an architect from Massachusetts named David Handlin.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, Updike&#8217;s <em>Rabbit, Run<\/em> made the list. But it does raise an eyebrow that it&#8217;s the ONLY Updike book included.
