{"id":2443,"date":"2014-09-06T08:58:02","date_gmt":"2014-09-06T13:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=2443"},"modified":"2014-09-06T08:58:02","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T13:58:02","slug":"boston-globe-thanks-moran-for-rescuing-updike-items","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2014\/09\/06\/boston-globe-thanks-moran-for-rescuing-updike-items\/","title":{"rendered":"Boston Globe thanks Moran for rescuing Updike items"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Boston Globe<\/em> writer Alex Beam today posted an article-column titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/opinion\/2014\/09\/06\/john-updike-trash-everyone-treasure\/pXAbC1acuL0grVpK7CrRZI\/story.html\">&#8220;John Updike&#8217;s trash is everyone&#8217;s treasure,&#8221;<\/a> in which he recounted the story of <em>The Other John Updike<\/em>\u00a0activist-archivist Paul Moran&#8217;s habit of hauling off bags of trash from Updike&#8217;s curb and rescuing all manner of ephemera.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moran rescued a lot more than ephemera,&#8221; Beam adds. &#8220;He has posted at least one explicit letter from a lover, and now owns an Updike address book, a trove of floppy disks (Wang!), and notes for a contemplated novel about Saint Paul, which may someday see the light of day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beam, who says he disagrees with Moran&#8217;s assertion that Updike&#8217;s &#8220;tossed-out family and travel snapshots are copyright-protected&#8221;\u2014actually,\u00a0intellectual property law seems to be\u00a0pretty clear that the person who took the photo is the author\/artist and that his\/her property is\u00a0protected\u2014appropriately closes with a line from Updike&#8217;s poem &#8220;My Children at the Dump&#8221; and says, &#8220;Thank you, Paul Moran . . . .
