{"id":2143,"date":"2014-05-29T07:53:30","date_gmt":"2014-05-29T12:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/?p=2143"},"modified":"2014-05-29T07:58:36","modified_gmt":"2014-05-29T12:58:36","slug":"bostons-north-shore-responds-to-begley-bio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/2014\/05\/29\/bostons-north-shore-responds-to-begley-bio\/","title":{"rendered":"Boston&#8217;s North Shore responds to Begley bio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning <em>The Boston Globe<\/em> printed an article titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/regionals\/north\/2014\/05\/28\/updike-found-whole-mass-middling-hidden-troubled-america-north-shore\/UTnq4Lx0tnt6xcyEE6VAxJ\/story.html\">&#8220;Updike found &#8216;the whole mass of middling, hidden, troubled America&#8217; on North Shore,&#8221;<\/a> in which residents who knew Updike react to what biographer Adam Begley had to say about that chapter in Updike&#8217;s life, and Begley is quoted as well. &#8220;My feeling is that Martha and John drew up the drawbridge,&#8221; Begley writes of the Beverly Farms\u00a0move.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-29-at-7.48.41-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2144\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-29-at-7.48.41-AM-300x213.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 7.48.41 AM\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-29-at-7.48.41-AM-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-29-at-7.48.41-AM-422x300.png 422w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/johnupdikesociety\/files\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-29-at-7.48.41-AM.png 506w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s also a sidebar on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/regionals\/north\/2014\/05\/28\/updike-north-shore-homes\/eEBAIKyJnIUPYhFrsjKxvN\/story.html\">&#8220;Updike&#8217;s North Shore homes&#8221;<\/a> that has no text to speak of\u2014just a briefly annotated list of addresses where John\u00a0Updike lived from 1957-2007, with Adam Begley&#8217;s biography of <em>Updike<\/em> cited as the source.<\/p>\n<p>Though the purpose of the articles aren&#8217;t\u00a0stated, it&#8217;s clear that there&#8217;s plenty of interest in Updike and just as much pride that he called the Boston North Shore home for 50 years:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Little Violet, Essex and Heartbreak roads, Ipswich (1957-58)\u2014<\/strong>The wood-frame cottage Updike and first wife Mary rented when they first moved to town.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polly Dole House, 26 East St., Ipswich (1958-70)\u2014<\/strong>Historic 17th-century home near downtown Ipswich, upgraded considerably while Updike lived there (pictured).<\/p>\n<p><strong>50 Labor-in-Vain Road, Ipswich (1970-74)\u2014<\/strong>Larger home the Updikes and their four children lived in until John and Mary&#8217;s separation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>58 West Main St., Georgetown (1976-82)\u2014<\/strong>After a brief stint living as a bachelor in Boston&#8217;s Beacon Hill neighborhood, Updike moved to Georgetown to be nearer his children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>675 Hale St., Beverly Farms (1982-2007)\u2014<\/strong>The stately home near the water where Updike and his second wife, Martha, spent their later years together.<\/p>\n<p>Let the literary pilgrimages begin.
