Before embarking on my trip to the Philippines I decided to spend some much needed time at home in South Africa \u2014 I hadn\u2019t seen my family in a year so I was eager to head home for a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During my time at home, my family and I spent a weekend away in the \u201cbushveld\u201d \u2014 a South African term used to describe a wild savannah terrain, usually abundant with a variety of African wildlife \u2014 where we caught up, \u201cbraaied\u201d (South African barbecue), and went on a Safari drive in search of some wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/li><\/ul>Left: On the safari drive we were lucky enough to be able to encounter a giraffe, who was extremely friendly and didn’t mind all the human attention . Right: We also came across a herd of Golden Wildebeest (front) and ostrich (back) grazing together. *Fun fact: Golden Wildebeest do not occur naturally in the wild, the golden coat colour is caused by a recessive gene that only some wildebeest possess so farmers breed them to have the desirable trait.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
Another week at home was spent in Durban where I was able to see my grandmother for the first time in about 3 years. We went to the beach, had some famous Durban Curry, and ate WAY to much ice cream. I was also attacked by a sting-ray on the very first day that we arrived at the beach \u2014 note to self: watch where you’re walking, especially in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was definitely a jam-packed 4 weeks at home but it was the perfect way to begin the summer and a great way to transition into my trip to the Philippines! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
