{"id":7884,"date":"1997-05-22T09:42:53","date_gmt":"1997-05-22T14:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=7884"},"modified":"2025-03-10T13:48:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T18:48:43","slug":"with-david-kl-and-indonesia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/1997\/05\/22\/with-david-kl-and-indonesia\/","title":{"rendered":"With David: KL and Indonesia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2025<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8050\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8050\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00808.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8050\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00808.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"151\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KL train station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were places I wanted to go on my &#8220;sabbatical tour&#8221; in Southeast Asia that David and I visited after jumping off the May Term bus.\u00a0 That included Kuala Lumpur, whose train station we had stopped at in January, and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>One of the goals for me for this part of my sabbatical was to meet with Scouters&#8211;and I did.<\/p>\n<p>Kuala Lumpur is a reasonably recent city, located at the site of a gold <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00785-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8045\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00785-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00803.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8043 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00803.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a>discovery in the late 19th century.\u00a0 Though the government has moved to nearby Putrajaya,\u00a0 KL is still the business center of Malaysia<\/p>\n<p>Continuing my interest in Scouting around the world, David and I met with Eric Khoo, the International Commissioner, in Malaysia.\u00a0 We had a wonderful dinner in a restaurant of his choice, and I later found a neckerchief he had contributed to the museum for BP in Kenya!<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia was a challenge because there was a contested election occurring. We consulted the State Department about going, but got nothing definite about whether to go or not.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8046\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8046\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00789-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8046\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00789-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Batavia Club<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00818-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8052 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00818-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>We went anyway on Garuda Airlines.\u00a0 The first day, the election, was really quiet.\u00a0 Essentially, everything was shut down, and we could go anywhere, which was a novelty, believe me.\u00a0 Traffic in Jakarta <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00624-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8044 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00624-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>usually resembled traffic in Los Angeles.\u00a0 We spent some time with the Scout headquarter staff, who took us to their camp. At one point, they sat us down in a cabin, and, it being Friday, went to the mosque for midday prayers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00817.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8049 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00817-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Unlike any other Scout organization, Indonesia uses\u00a0 a coconut seed instead of the compass trefoil.\u00a0 The coconut symbolizes toughness and adaptability, fitting for the world&#8217;s largest Scout organization.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a school-based activity, but also had an important and not forgotten role in the war for independence from the Dutch.<\/p>\n<p>We took the train to Yogyakarta, passing through the flat and fertile fields of Java.\u00a0 The city is considered the cultural center of Indonesia.\u00a0 It has two <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00826.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8055 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00826.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00621.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8042 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00621.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a>well-known ruins of earlier days (Prambanan, a Hindu shrine, and the restored Buddhist masterpiece, Borobudur), and is the only kingdom left in Indonesia.\u00a0 During the Revolusi (the war of independence), Yogyakarta was the rebel capital.\u00a0 We saw all three of the sites, but <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00616.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8070 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00616.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a>what was really memorable was meeting Scouts.\u00a0 We went to their meeting place&#8211;where they drew water from well!<\/p>\n<p>One amusing incident.\u00a0 An enterprising youngster approached us and told us he collected foreign money:\u00a0 &#8220;Could you give me some for my collection?&#8221; I was moved to assist the numismatist.<\/p>\n<p>From Jogja, we flew to Bali, the Hindu island amid the Muslim sea that is Indonesia.\u00a0 Its beaches are famous (and full of Aussies, who live close by), <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00829-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8058\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00829-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a> but the cultural features are quite distinct.\u00a0 David and I had a tour, and I remember going through a village where our guide talked about how it had once been Chinese dominant.\u00a0 A pogrom in the 1960s had significantly reduced that ethnic minority.\u00a0 Being Christian or Buddhist, Chinese, and relatively wealthy had and has attracted hostility.\u00a0 In fact, as I recall, because of the election and suspected violence, some Chinese tour groups cancelled their proposed visits.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, for us, the tranquility promised was what was delivered.\u00a0 Given a choice, I&#8217;d go to Bali over Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>It was also a chance to stop in Manila, partly to complete my tour of Scout visits.\u00a0 I recall that the Scout uniform was as close to mine in the 50s as I&#8217;d seen since the 50s, but then I remembered that the Philippines had been an American colony since the Spanish-American War (and the insurrection that followed it).\u00a0 It was the most &#8220;American&#8221; country we visited&#8211;with baseball scores, among other left over Americanisms.\u00a0 \u00a0The jitneys were colorful ways to get around, but Manila still bore the earmarks of the brutal battles for the city in World War II.\u00a0 Makati City was where the new skyscrapers were.<\/p>\n<p>And then it was time to come home, a three month journey.
