{"id":7882,"date":"1997-05-11T09:42:48","date_gmt":"1997-05-11T14:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=7882"},"modified":"2025-03-10T13:42:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T18:42:21","slug":"with-the-may-term-class-in-97","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/1997\/05\/11\/with-the-may-term-class-in-97\/","title":{"rendered":"With the May Term Class in 97"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2025<\/p>\n<p>Like riding an on-off bus, I jumped on the May Term bus in Beijing, joining familiar faces in familiar places&#8211;China and South East Asia, and getting off the bus and joining David for further exploration of SE Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The trip might have resulted in the most IWU faculty in Asia at one time, since the trip leaders were Jerry Olson, Dave Willis, and Zhen-hu Jin.\u00a0 And <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00996.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8000 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00996.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>me.\u00a0 It was, however, done in reverse from the usual Asia trip, which duplicated many traditional journeys, where you wound up eventually in Beijing with an audience with the Emperor.\u00a0 This trip started in Beijing and eventually ended in SE Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The Forbidden City.\u00a0 The Great Wall.\u00a0 Arthur Anderson (Willis and Olson <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/d3641055-a3d4-428b-b2be-4d0cded78a32-e1737653134849.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8005 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/d3641055-a3d4-428b-b2be-4d0cded78a32-e1737653134849-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>were, after all, accountants).\u00a0 A few memories:\u00a0 the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00997.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7999 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00997.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>countdown clock in Tiananmen Square, ticking down on the &#8220;handover&#8221; of Hong Kong; Amber Kujath and others catching me with my pants (legs) down on the Great Wall. The zip offs, discovered initially at Banana Republic and used at Philmont in 1987 have become stock in trade for me. Shorts when needed, long pants when not.<\/p>\n<p>Given my interest in history (my dissertation, after all, was on Americans in China and US foreign policy in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00964.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8001 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00964.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>the 20s and 30s), the Legation Quarter always fascinated me.\u00a0 It was, in a sense, another Forbidden City in the early 20th century, a refuge from the turmoil of China (and the attacks during the Boxer uprising).\u00a0 Many of the buildings remain, including the entrance to the old Japanese Legation.\u00a0 Several trips I had guides take us through the old area to get a sense of what life had been like; today, the embassies are housed in a new area in more modern facilities&#8211;but still closely guarded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG01001-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8008 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG01001-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>Hong Kong.\u00a0 Always a welcome place to eat, shop, and sightsee.\u00a0 On this trip, I arranged a visit to City University of Hong Kong, which my\u00a0 friend Eleanor hosted.\u00a0 And of course, the Peak is a visual treat.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG01003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8007 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG01003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG01000-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8009 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG01000-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From there, it was on to Bangkok.\u00a0 And the usual glitter of the Palace grounds and area.\u00a0 There\u00a0 was\u00a0 also\u00a0 the\u00a0 trip\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 former\u00a0 capital,\u00a0 Ayudhya,\u00a0 the\u00a0 ruins\u00a0 a reminder\u00a0 that similar\u00a0 religions\u00a0 did\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00959-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8014 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/IMG00959-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>not\u00a0 make\u00a0 the\u00a0 Siamese\u00a0 and\u00a0 Thais\u00a0 best\u00a0 friends.\u00a0 The\u00a0 destruction\u00a0 caused\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/bk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8013 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/05\/bk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>Thais\u00a0 to\u00a0 move\u00a0 the\u00a0 capital to\u00a0 Bangkok.\u00a0 The business trip was to a contract manufacturer for athletic shoes, who gradually became vary defensive about its labor practices!<\/p>\n<p>This was my time to get off the bus, and with David, get to KL and Indonesia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2025 Like riding an on-off bus, I jumped on the May Term bus in Beijing, joining familiar faces in familiar places&#8211;China and South East Asia, and getting off the bus and joining David for further exploration of SE Asia.
