{"id":7866,"date":"1997-04-20T20:36:50","date_gmt":"1997-04-21T01:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=7866"},"modified":"2025-03-10T13:32:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T18:32:38","slug":"7866","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/1997\/04\/20\/7866\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Gloomy in Gumi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2025<\/p>\n<p>The second part of my sabbatical was conceived as an opportunity to work in China (the better to tell my international business classes about being an expatriate).\u00a0 I talked with my contacts at Motorola about the possibility or working in Beijing or Tianjin and had some positive feedback, which would combine a job with some time to travel.\u00a0 That fell when the Asian financial crisis erupted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/gumi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8030 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/gumi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a>Looking for a way to spend time in Asia, I learned that the local Rotary was sending four non-Rotarians in an exchange with a chapter in Korea.\u00a0 I had some connection with the interviewers in Champaign, and wound up being selected.\u00a0 That meant nearly a month in Korea, staying with Rotarians, mostly in their homes, in an area based in Gumi.\u00a0 That meant little time in Seoul and more time in smaller towns, including Kyongju, Taegu, and Andong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/12-IMG02046.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8025 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/12-IMG02046.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a>There were four non-Rotarians led by a Rotarian who was a professor at Eastern Illinois.\u00a0 \u00a0Three others were from Champaign-Urbana, Paul Adams and Jen-Jen.\u00a0 Paul was returning &#8220;home.&#8221;\u00a0 He was a Korean-American product of the Korean War (American father, Korean mother) who had been adopted by the Adams family.\u00a0 The Adams were among the first missionaries to arrive in Korea (Methodists, who divided the country with the Presbyterians, I believe).\u00a0 His grandfather had founded one of the universities in Taegu, so he was something of a celebrity on our trip.\u00a0 He was also a skilled cook, and one night when we had been left alone, introduced me to chapchae (sweet potato noodles) that have become one of my favorite Korean dishes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/01-IMG02035.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8029 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/01-IMG02035.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"148\" \/><\/a>We were mostly hosted by Rotarians, however, living in their apartments, and like them, sleeping on a heated floor that resembled the homes they had in the countryside, which had fireplaces and in effect chimneys under the floor.\u00a0 We stayed one holiday weekend in a farmhouse (two cows in the garage) when our host returned to his family homestead.\u00a0 Grampa got up in the night to restart the fire.\u00a0 As was true in Korea, young people had fled to Seoul and there was no longer a school in the area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/27-IMG02061.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8019 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/27-IMG02061.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a>What else do I remember from that trip over 20 years ago?\u00a0 Confucius was still alive in this country in several senses.\u00a0 We were there in May, and the national exams were coming up that would essential determine their future. Korea has one of the highest expenditures for additional education, and several of our host&#8217;s children begged off playing or conversing to study.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/16-IMG02050.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8023 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/16-IMG02050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a>The lesson was reinforced when we went to a university in Andong, a second-tier school.\u00a0 The students complained that they were unable to get jobs with the chaebols, who interviewed only students from tier one schools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/15-IMG02049.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8024 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/15-IMG02049.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/03-IMG02037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8017 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/03-IMG02037.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>We got a great introduction to Korean nationalism.\u00a0 We were in an area that had been invaded by Japan in ancient days.\u00a0 There were reminders of those battles and several shrines, including a temple that was featured on one of the Korean bills.\u00a0 The results of 40 years of Japanese occupation were still evident in our hosts&#8211;the lingering taste of being treated as inferiors.<\/p>\n<p>One other sign of national pride.\u00a0 We went to visit with the first Ford dealer in Seoul, but on the streets, the cars were Hyundai or Kia or Daewoo.\u00a0 Nary a Toyota.\u00a0 I was so impressed with the cars that I bought and proudly drove a Hyundai wagon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/08-IMG02042.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8026 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/08-IMG02042.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>It is always fun for me to spend time in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/17-IMG02051.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8022 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/17-IMG02051.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a>Kyongju, which was also in our district.\u00a0 The remaining mounds and ruins such as the observatory are reminders of the Silla Kingdom and the inheritance of many Chinese cultural features from the Tang dynasty, subsequently passed on to their Japanese neighbors.\u00a0 How powerful was Chinese culture: Confucius, Buddhism, imperial splendor, language&#8211;borrowed and transformed, but still apparent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/21-IMG02055.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8021 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/21-IMG02055.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/21-IMG02055.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1997\/04\/21-IMG02055-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 85vw, 200px\" \/><\/a> We were an excuse to entertain, which meant eat, drink, and sing karaoke.
