There are some interesting murals on the walls. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2005\/08\/P1010120.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7790 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2005\/08\/P1010120-e1737067758493-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another was the museum housing the 17th Century Vasa, a ship sunk in the 1628 and resurrected in the 1960s.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a reminder that Sweden, which has pled neutrality in the 20th century, was one of the great powers in the past. Ask Peter the Great about the Great Northern War, which brought Swedish <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2005\/08\/P1010122.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7788 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2005\/08\/P1010122.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>troops deep into what is now Ukraine.\u00a0 And brought Peter to consider resettling the capital from Moscow to a new city on the Baltic. In any case, it&#8217;s the only intact vessel from the 17th century.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, I do have pictures of the Old Town.\u00a0 We probably got the standard tour of the city.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2005\/08\/P1010130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7772 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2005\/08\/P1010130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By this point, we were ready to come home&#8211;but also to go on further cruises; no packing and unpacking was nice, but the lack of free time would bedevil me.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what I had to say at the time in summarizing the trip:<\/p>\n<p>Great trip, full of medieaval and majestic&#8211;St. Petersburg is full of the<br \/>\nlavish wealth of Russia, all squandered by the Tsars on themselves, while<br \/>\nmost of the other cities spent time between Sweden and Denmark in the<br \/>\nearly period, then the Knights, then Sweden\/Poland, and finally<br \/>\nGermany\/Russia.\u00a0 Saw a wonderful performance in St Pete by Cossacks, the<br \/>\nsame wonderful folks who helped me be an American.<\/p>\n<p>Helsinki was a treat, but these northern Scandinavian countries are<br \/>\nwealthy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2025 The trip ended in Stockholm, but I have few recollections of what we saw.\u00a0 One was the City Hall, where Nobel Prize winners received their recognition.
