{"id":5118,"date":"2008-08-09T17:15:29","date_gmt":"2008-08-09T22:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=5118"},"modified":"2025-02-27T15:22:47","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T21:22:47","slug":"kingdom-of-the-serbs-and-croats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/2008\/08\/09\/kingdom-of-the-serbs-and-croats\/","title":{"rendered":"Kingdom of the Serbs and Croats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2024<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC00662.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5122 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC00662-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC00691.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5120 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC00691-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>One of the miracles to me of World War II was the creation of a south Slav kingdom in the Balkans, replacing one of the tinder boxes that had triggered wars before erupting in World War I.\u00a0 But that had blown up in the ethnic rivalries after the death of Tito, and the bitter fighting of 1991-1995\u00a0 could be seen in several towns <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC00632-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5121 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC00632-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/osijek.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5123 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/osijek-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>along the river.\u00a0 Our first stop in Croatia was Osijek, as in so many Danubian towns, a one-time Roman colony.\u00a0 The current town began around the 12th century, and was occupied by the Turks for over 150 years.\u00a0 Austrian authorities built a fortress, Tvrda, that is still one of the landmarks <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/vukovar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5125 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/vukovar-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>of the town of about 100,000.\u00a0 Baroque churches, a town square, a monument of gratitude for ending the plague&#8211;checks all the boxes.\u00a0 Croatian Serbian tensions led to Croatia siding with the Nazis.<\/p>\n<p>Belgrade, capital of Serbia, and one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00745-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5135 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00745-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a>continuously occupied cities in Europe was our next stop.\u00a0 The city of over one million changed hands<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00761-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5138 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00761-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00761-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00761-1.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" \/><\/a> between Rome, Byzantium, the Frankish kingdom,\u00a0 Bulgarian Kingdom, and the Ottomans.
