{"id":5092,"date":"2008-08-09T13:11:14","date_gmt":"2008-08-09T18:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=5092"},"modified":"2025-02-27T15:20:40","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T21:20:40","slug":"hungry-for-hungary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/2008\/08\/09\/hungry-for-hungary\/","title":{"rendered":"Hungry for Hungary?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2024<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00541.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5096 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00541-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a>In 2008, we toured with Tauck from Budapest to the Black Sea.\u00a0 In trying to recreate that trip, I might have to include some things documented elsewhere (e.g.,<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00386.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5115 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00386-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a> blog from 2009, which I reconstructed first).\u00a0 Budapest, like Vienna, was once the capital of a much larger country, especially after the creation of the Dual Monarchy (Austria-Hungary)\u00a0 in 1867.\u00a0 Consequently, it has a disproportionate amount of imperial trappings: a\u00a0 huge Parliament<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00486.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5098 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00486.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> building, and from previous periods, impressive churches, remnants of a large Jewish community that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00512.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5097 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00512-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>was active in Zionist causes from their 3000 seat Moorish style synagogue, and a castle that was mostly trashed in the World War II battles to reclaim the city from the Nazis.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5102\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5102\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/bullets.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5102 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/bullets-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bullets from 1956<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00431-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5105 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00431-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> Many of the additions were built around the time of the centennial of settlement by Arpad and his Magyars.\u00a0 One of the finest is the Opera House.\u00a0 It had a box for Emperor Franz Joseph.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been there with Carolyn for Scheherazade, and with students for a Mahler symphony.\u00a0 It was on our tour.\u00a0 The sphinx-like lions guard the entrants and keep riff raff out <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00433.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5104 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00433-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>(sometimes).<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a cute subway (second in the world after London) that is cheap.\u00a0 However, you&#8217;re in real trouble if you don&#8217;t have your ticket handy.\u00a0 Undercover cops nailed someone when we were on\u00a0 it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00452.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5100 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00452-150x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00479.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5099 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/08\/DSC00479-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>And some good Hungarian food.\u00a0 There was a big covered food court that we could not resist.
