{"id":4983,"date":"2009-08-10T17:05:11","date_gmt":"2009-08-10T22:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=4983"},"modified":"2025-02-27T09:48:58","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T15:48:58","slug":"the-cute-german-cities-on-the-rhine-main-danube-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/2009\/08\/10\/the-cute-german-cities-on-the-rhine-main-danube-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cute German cities on the Rhine-Main-Danube II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2024<\/p>\n<p>The trip was fourteen days or so.\u00a0 Consequently, I broke the cruise in Bavaria before we reached Bamberg, and I promise you I&#8217;ll get you through German, Austria, and Hungary&#8211;eventually.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/bambergtownhall-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4985 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/bambergtownhall-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Bamberg dates from the 9th century, and its tourist appeal stems from the almost 2400 half timber homes.\u00a0 The highlights included an interesting stone bridge, a Rathaus (town hall) that&#8217;s on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/bamberg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4987 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/bamberg-150x133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>an island, and the residence of the prince-bishop. One interesting artistic technique evident is &#8220;fool the eye&#8221; or trompe l&#8217;oeil, which you can see pretty clearly on the side of the building here.\u00a0 Buried in the Cathedral are the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II and his wife Kunigunde, who had the cathedral built in the 11th century.\u00a0 It took <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05005-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4998 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05005-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>only 10 years.\u00a0 In addition to the\u00a0 sepulcher, there is a famous sculpture of the Bamberg Horseman. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4997 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05012-150x129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4996 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05009-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nuremberg posed a challenge.\u00a0 It was another historically interesting city&#8211;both in the old days, having been founded in 1050, and of course as the center of the Nazi rallies and the Nuremberg Laws depriving Jews of citizenship.\u00a0 By the end of the Second World War,\u00a0 there were no Jews in Nuremberg, but the trials at the Palace of Justice led to the hanging of many Nazi leaders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5013\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/durerhouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5013 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/durerhouse-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Durer House<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05082-1-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5012 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05082-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>There were tours to each of these emphases.\u00a0 Carolyn chose the Nazi sites; having seen enough of the wartime butchery, I opted for the old city, and the home of one of its most famous citizens, Albrecht Durer.\u00a0 I even have a Durer coffee mug sitting on my shelf as a memento of that tour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5006\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5006\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05032-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5006 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05032-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frauenkirche<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05068.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5004 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05068-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Nuremberg was an important city during the Holy Roman Empire, and the Diet frequently met in the Nuremberg Castle.\u00a0 Another sites, Frauenkirche, was a church built in the 14th century on the site of a synagogue destroyed after a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/chorelein-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5011 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/chorelein-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/nuremberg-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5008 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/nuremberg-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>pogrom.\u00a0 From 1525 until 1810 the church was Lutheran, but a parish restored it to Catholicism.\u00a0 There&#8217;s also a major cathedral in Nuremberg, and an unusual architectural feature, chorlein, which is a projection on the first floor of a house. It seems to be a medieval add-on.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5018\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5018\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/romanruinsregensburg-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5018 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/romanruinsregensburg-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Remains of Roman fort<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some of the shipmates who went with Carolyn were really struck Hitler&#8217;s oratorical skills.\u00a0 Having seen &#8220;Triumph of the Will&#8221;, Riefenstahl&#8217;s movie of the 1934 Party rally in Nuremberg, I can believe it.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two nautical miles from Nuremberg sits the &#8220;capital&#8221; of the Holy Roman Empire of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05106.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5019 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05106-150x133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/cathedral1248-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5016 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/cathedral1248-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>German people&#8211;Regensburg.\u00a0 The furthest northern point of the Danube River, it had its origins as a Roman fort, part of which still exists. From the 5th through the 13th centuries, it was the capital of Bavaria, and later the Perpetual Seat of the Empire&#8217;s Diet.\u00a0 In 845, 14 Bohemian princes were baptized in Regensburg; thus, the Czech lands were drawn into Roman Catholicism rather than Slavic Orthodox.\u00a0 Started in 1280, the Cathedral was dedicated in 1520, but has been renovated several times, including in the 19th century by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/passau.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5028 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/passau-150x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05315.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5026 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05315-150x133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>King Ludwig 1.<\/p>\n<p>The last stop for us in Germany was Passau, where the Inn and Ilz Rivers join the Danube.\u00a0 It originated in Roman times, but a fire in 1662 devastated the city, which was rebuilt in the Baroque style.\u00a0 A 13th century fortress, Veste Oberhaus, overlooks the town; it was once the residence of the prince bishop, as was Veste Niederhaus, also a fortress protecting the city.\u00a0 St. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05312.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5027 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05312-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"176\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05330.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5025 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/DSC05330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Stephan&#8217;s Cathedral, built in 1688, had what was once the largest organ in the world, with 17,774\u00a0<a title=\"Organ pipe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Organ_pipe\">pipes<\/a>\u00a0and 233\u00a0<a title=\"Registration (organ)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Registration_(organ)\">registers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are about to cross the Danube into Austria,since Passau is on the border.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2024 The trip was fourteen days or so.\u00a0 Consequently, I broke the cruise in Bavaria before we reached Bamberg, and I promise you I&#8217;ll get you through German, Austria, and Hungary&#8211;eventually.
